As primary instructor, I have taught
What Makes Us Human: Self-Deception
Introductory undergraduate class.
Stanford Summer Session 2026
We all self-deceive at times. We promise ourselves that tomorrow we’ll finally start exercising or finish our homework; we insist that a painful rejection is really the other person’s loss; we ignore signs that someone close to us is growing distant. Such cases raise deep questions about how we understand ourselves and our own minds.
This course explores what self-deception is, why it matters, and how it shapes our lives. We will draw on research in epistemology, psychology, cognitive science, and moral philosophy to understand one of the most puzzling features of human thought: our ability to believe what we know or should believe isn’t true.
Introduction to Ethics
Introductory undergraduate class.
City College of New York, Fall 2023.
Upper-undergraduate Tutorial. Co-designed and taught with Miikka O. Jaarte.
Fall 2024, Stanford University.
The Male Gaze in Cinema
Student evaluations mention:
“Miikka and Lis are such an amazing and dynamic duo. They're funny and extremely knowledgable and really showed me a lot about the history and nuances of the male gaze. Definitely would recommend this class.”
“This is definitely my favorite class so far at Stanford, and I always look forward to this class. Lis and Miikka are absolutely wonderful instructors who are just here to share their passion about movies and to hear what you have to say about the male gaze in cinema.”
Reading Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason
Advanced undergraduate seminar.
Universität zu Köln, Winter 2019.
Student evaluations mention:
“I’m always looking forward to the seminar, even though it is really hard and pretty complicated for me, but your passion and knowledge of the subject makes the seminar, despite its sometimes dry content, very interesting and enjoyable! Also your always being able to answer any questions and ability to rephrase answers is impressive and makes the content accessible and up to date/ applicable to everyday examples”
“Die Dozentin wirkt begeistert von ihrem Fach und gibt dies an die Studierenden weiter. […] Alle Fragen werden beantwortet.”

Some of my student evaluations mention:
○“[Lis was] great at explaining difficult concepts and creating section material that expanded on what we learned from both class and readings.”
○ “Aspect 1: The in-section activities made the material more engaging and easier to understand.
Aspect 2: Lis did a great job connecting lecture content to examples and discussions that felt practical and relatable.
Aspect 3: She was very responsive over email, which made it easier to ask questions and stay on track in the class.”
○“1. Lis is a very attentive listener and will always make it a point to clarify our thoughts to make sure she understands what we're trying to say.
2. Lis will take some time to think before articulating her thoughts, which is very helpful as she carefully chooses words to make sure we follow.
3. Lis helps create an inviting environment for everyone to participate.”○ “Really open to discussing whatever questions we had or were on our minds. Would checkin with students to make sure we were understanding. Creating a really welcoming class environment.”
